UK National Standard for Pilates Teachers
Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs)
Pilates is one of the most popular exercise programmes in the world with more than one million people taking regular Pilates classes in the UK alone.
With the upsurge of interest in Pilates, leading UK Pilates groups and government bodies working with the exercise industry have recognised the need for a formal National Standard that ensures the quality and safety of Pilates teaching that helps Pilates enthusiasts check that their teacher is properly qualified.
The National Standard ensures that your Pilates teacher has the knowledge and skills to teach classes in a safe, enjoyable and effective way so that everyone, regardless of their personal level of fitness, can benefit from Pilates.
The Body Control Pilates Association (BCPA) has led the way in the process with its teacher-training course becoming one of the first to be formally approved. Experienced teachers have also been required to undertake additional training to meet the requirements of the rigorous new National Standard.
It is strongly recommended that, when starting or even when continuing with Pilates classes, you check that your teacher is approved against the ‘Level 3’ Pilates standard – you can do this by checking the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) at www.exerciseregister.org and click on ‘Full Register of Our Members’.
“The new National Standard is a major milestone for Pilates worldwide. Pilates organisations in the UK have spent several years helping to develop its content and the result will be hugely beneficial for Pilates enthusiasts across the country. This new standard will significantly help to ensure the highest quality, safety and effectiveness of Pilates teaching”.
Lynne Robinson – Body Control Pilates Association.
The Body Control Pilates Association (BCPA) is Europe’s largest professional body for Pilates teachers, all of whom have completed a comprehensive training in Pilates mat work and are governed by a Code of Practice related to teaching and to professional ethics. Body Control Pilates teachers undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD) every year to update their skills and to continue their membership of the Body Control Pilates Association.
Peter is a member of both The Body Control Pilates Association and the Register of Exercise Professionals. He is recognised as a formally qualified Pilates teacher on the Register of Exercise Professionals, having fully met the requirements of the UK National Standard for Pilates.
